by Ramón Menocal
The Cañaverales (Sugar Cane Fields) series explores the cultural and historical symbolism of Cuba’s agricultural landscape. Through abstraction and gestural expression, these works evoke the rhythm, density, and layered textures of sugar cane fields—an enduring metaphor for Cuban identity.
Rooted in memory and materiality, the series reflects both the physical environment and the socio-cultural narratives embedded within it. The compositions suggest both organic growth and fragmentation, referencing the history of labor, colonial legacy, and transformation tied to the land. Through dynamic mark-making and rich surfaces, Menocal translates landscape into an emotional and conceptual experience.
